Organisations and Offices - Genealogy SitesOfficial organisations and offices. These are probably the most important websites for the family historian researching genealogy. The National Archives contain, as its name implies, documents and images on every possible aspect of life. Because genealogical research is considered to be important there are many help-pages that aid navigation between the pages on the website and there are also numerous tutorials on using and understanding different documents, for example reading more ancient handwriting styles and understanding the latin in use etc. The Borthwick institure is particularly important because it houses the records of wills proved in the Prerogative Court of York before 1858. The General Register Office at Southport holds all the records of birth, marriage and death since 1837 and the beginning of civil registration in England. Local register Offices will also be able to supply copies of these certificates.
