Welcome to Genealogy Sites dot info

Gone are the days when anyone wanting to research their family or local history had to start the search in libraries, Record Offices and local archives. It is possible, now, to do much of the initial searching on the internet and then go straight to the place at which the relevant archives are stored. A great deal of material relating to local history and genealogy has been filmed or digitised and it is these copies to which the public will generally be allowed access. The original materials, particularly those being frequently referred to, like Parish Registers and census enumeration books, just would not stand up to the constant handling as they are becoming fragile with age. If our search takes us into the less usually requested items then the normal procedure is to visit the archives at which they are held, (usually requiring personal registration first), and request access to them. The request frequently has to be done in advance of your visit, so check. Filmed materials will be available to view on the readers.

Taking use of the internet even futher it is now possible to do a great deal of research, with good results, before we even set foot outside our front doors. A cautionary word, though, multitudes decide to make a family tree but not everyone is as careful as they should be about checking evidence and making sure that mistakes haven't been made. If that family tree is uploaded to a website then someone visits it, recognises their family line and accepts the mistake as a genuine fact then it is on the way to being accepted as such. Within 2 or 3 people seeing that mistake and incorporating it into their own documents, the mistake is fast becoming very much like proven fact as it can now be validated from different sources.

Family History

There are so many websites, good websites, on the internet that it would be well nigh impossible to list them all so the following pages are designed to help you get started and offer you a selection from the variety of websites that can be found if you search hard enough for them. Many local history websites incorporate pages to assist the researcher in family history and vice versa. Many websites are the result of someone's passion interst in a location, historical person or specific area of study. Most of the websites that you visit will have a links page that will direct you to other related topics and websites.

One of the factors to recognise is that the websites fall into distinct categories: those that are created by a number of volunteers and offer all information free; those that are purely commercial and may offer searches and some infomation free but any images or further material will be charged for; and lastly those that are the result of someone's passionate interest in a particular topic. Used judiciously, a great deal of information can be gleaned just from search results if you put in the right search criteria.

Finally, used wisely, the internet is opening doors and providing opportunities for growing our family trees that we could only have dreamed of only a few short years ago. Use the internet sites as starting points and then, wherever possible, go back to the original documentation and check their validity for yourself. You'll soon be hooked!

Some of the websites listed at this site are completely commercial offering services, information or goods for a charge. Some have free indexing of information and then pay-to-view selected entries.
Some are absolutely free of any charges. Some may provide background information of historical or genealogical interest on a topic and some are search sites to locate individuals by name.
